Rocketing Our Way Through Learning Part 2

My students need model rockets and engines to inspire the next generation of rocket scientists!

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to see and feel a Saturn V rocket launch from Kennedy Space Center? I do, although I was very young! I cannot take my students to a rocket launch, but they can experience one right on our school grounds!

Last year my students were able to build and launch rockets thanks to DonorsChoose.

I would like for the students to be able to have the same experience this year. My students worked very carefully to build their rockets. They were really excited when we finally added the parachutes. Then we invited parents and other classrooms to view our launch. It was a blast! Rockets landed on the school roof, in a tree, in a neighboring yard, and some even landed on the playing field, as they were supposed to!

My Project

At the end of the school year, the third graders were asking me if they were going to be able to launch rockets next year in fourth grade. The rockets are just part of a unit on force and motion. We read a biography about Neil Armstrong. We conduct experiments using toys that were used in experiments on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station and then compare our results with those of the real astronauts. Students learn how to work together as astronauts. In order for my students to have the same launch experience as last year, we need replacement rockets and engines. From the DonorsChoose grant last year I still have the launch pad to launch the rockets. I've even got AA batteries already ordered using school funds. The launcher needed several sets of AA batteries to launch all of our rockets!

I still remember my father and brother building and launching model rockets.

I can still feel the Saturn V rocket launch. Help me to give my students memories and help me to inspire the next generation of rocket scientists!
