Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school had a goal of raising reading levels this year. We were still seeing delays as a result of Covid. So our principal wrote and received a grant to get a professional reading specialist to come and work with our teachers and the results are fantastic! Thus far, we have seen a13.5% growth in reading levels overall in the school. 15% increase in ELL students reading growth has been observed. Additionally, there has been a rise of checked out books from our school library.

" 93% of students say that their favorite books are the ones that they picked out themselves." As we are heading into summer, we want this growth to continue and we know that permitting children to choose their reading material encourages literacy.

We also know that not all of our kiddos have access to reading materials at home. Providing them with ownership of their books provides pride in having the ability to keep their books. We know this because we currently have a birthday club where our learners get to choose a book from our used books on hand and they love it!

A bright shinny new book adds novelty to the process. That new book glow promotes excitement and a desire to get a coin for our book vending machine. This grant will provide us the stock needed for the machine. We thank you for your consideration.
