Our students are from the Bay Area and many students are coming from marginalized communities. Our students are curious, determined, and adventurous learners. Our students are always excited to perform experiments and be allowed some control over the parameters of the experiment. I am very passionate about instilling confidence in their science abilities.
Our students deserve the ability to develop these skills with fun, relevant, and interesting material.
By giving them some control in the development of the experiments that they perform, they are able to see themselves as scientists. This allows them to see how science is relevant in their lives. Our school will be using distanced learning in the fall and this project will allow them to still practice science in their homes!
My Project
Our departments goal is to instill curiosity and determination into our students so they can design their own experiments. Normally this would include multiple hands-on experiments, but this year we need to get a little creative. Students will be completing small experiments to build their skills and use this lab as a summation of those skills.
By funding this project, you buy 150 students a basic kit of materials for guided chemistry labs they can perform in their homes.
This rocket car lab will be their first attempt at designing their own experiment at home. With these materials, students will be able to realize how exciting being a scientist/engineer can be!
