My Students
My classes are composed of 8th grade STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) students. We are reading the Homer Hickam memoir, Rocket Boys. It is a story of growing up in a mining town, and a boy's pursuit of amateur rocketry in a coal mining town. Students annotate the novel as they read. Unfortunately, the novel doesn't hold up post-it annotations well, and many of our novels are falling apart. It would be great to have some extra for next year!
My Project
Students need newer copies of "Rocket Boys" as our old ones are falling apart due to wear and tear. Students in my class annotate their novels using post-its and identify elements of characterization, plot, literary analysis, and theme connections. The post-its are wonderful, except, they do make it difficult for the books to remain in-tact. Since they are paperback books, many of the novels are literally falling apart and breaking in half.
It would be wonderful for my students next year to have brand new books to annotate.
The novel would enhance the curriculum in their science class. Thank you!
