I will be teaching a new elective class, called Helping Hands to 20, middle school students (grades 6, 7, and 8) with mixed learning abilities about giving back to their school and community through different activities and projects. Middle school is a crucial time in tweens lives. They are easily influenced, both good and bad. Although I am a math teacher, I am continually guiding students in making good choices, feeling confident in themselves, and showing kindness throughout their day.
The goal of this Rock Project is to make students smile, give them a gentle reminder of who they want to be, and inspire kindness to all who pass through our middle school courtyard.
The requested items will be used to create a rock garden full of color and inspiration. Students will wash and dry their rocks, paint them solid colors using the paintbrushes and acrylic paint, then add designs and positive notes using the paint pens. Finally the rocks will be sealed with Mod Podge to protect their designs so that their kind words can last forever.
This project is perfect for this diverse group of learners. Not every student has the ability to achieve straight A's, but every student has the ability to be kind. By having these students create this rock garden, they will be giving back to their school community, encouraging kindness, and brightening our middle school courtyard!
