Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I don't want students just sitting using pen, pencil and paper. That's not the world they live in.
My students are talkative, creative, and curious.
They enjoy activities during which it doesn't seem like I'm trying to teach them something (although I am) such as drawing a veggie or fruit as a superhero and sharing its superpower with 4 people and then drawing the hero's nemesis and sharing again, or having teams of students build a 30-centimeter tower out of link cubes that will support the weight of a basketball. Many of my students have difficultly sitting still and quietly for an extended period of time in a "normal" classroom environment. They also live in a low income area, and some of them don't have many toys, or books. A few don't even have crayons and paper at home.
My Project
My students will use the Cubelets (along with the other Cubelets sets and Dash robots you've already graciously donated to us) and tablets to program and direct the robots to engage in increasingly challenging tasks and assignments.
Not only will the Cubelets be used with my current students and my future students, but I also plan to use them for an after school enrichment club with students from grades 3rd to 5th.
I already have Lego set (again, thanks to all of you) that can attach to the robots. Students will use these to expand the function and size of the robots. Also, I will break down the 20 piece Cubelet set I'm requesting into a basic set of 12; saving the special function cubes (Speaker, Bar Graph, Temperature, Knob, Brightness, Maximum, and Minimum) for more complex challenges.
My classroom and enrichment students will gain practical experience solving tasks with robotics, coding principles, and design thinking.
