Robots on the Open Road!

My students need the freedom to have their Sphero robots travel on rough surfaces. With these durable covers, the Spheros will move outside the classroom and take the students to another dimension of applied robotics.

My Students

Can you imagine being a 12 or 13-year-old today? Innovative devices propel massive quantities of information your way. You may or may not own a smartphone, but you know the power they hold. You may or may not own a tablet or computer, but you have used one. With online games and social media, you are frightened to be left on the periphery of it all. Your best hope may be going to a relative's house or the library to access the internet, or you may hope your mom lets you use her phone. You may have to look over your friend's shoulder or figure it out on your own, but you get online somehow because the alternative is unbearable.

The fear of being left out or left behind is amplified for a young teenager living in poverty.

Because of this, it is a mission that is critical for schools to import the realities of being a 21st-century child into our often outdated classrooms. The cost to a child of being left out of the technological and applied sciences of today is catastrophic to the child and to our future as a society.

My Project

Our goal is to have students explore the application of robotics in a real life setting. With these durable covers, students will see their robots move in an outdoor environment allowing them to apply robotics in real world settings. Whether it is continuing with a message delivery service or transporting items, students will be able to extend their thinking and possibilities to life outside the classroom. These covers will protect the Spheros as they travel on sidewalks, on blacktop and across barriers. The knobs will change the grip allowing a better climbing function as well. The students are eager to explore the new possibilities.
