My Students

I teach in a Title 1 ESOL Center in Florida. Many of my students come from poverty and/or refugee families. Some children come in the door with a supportive family and every resource imaginable, but many don't. It's my job to make school a safe, loving, and happy place for all students.

Poverty and trauma create a set of needs that standard education isn’t prepared to meet.

In addition to math and reading, we provide breakfast, lunch, sensory experiences, consistency, counseling, and so much more.

My Project

Bee Bot is a robot that helps young children learn coding while also practicing fundamental academic skills.

By creating simple strings of code, kindergarteners tell Bee Bot where to go.

Classmates can create obstacle courses of increasing difficulty for Bee Bot to maneuver.

When students become more fluent in coding, I can create floor mats with math and literacy skills and students can program Bee Bot to travel to the correct answer. This makes basic tasks like learning aight words and answering addition problems much more interesting, and the longer I can keep the students engaged, the more they learn!
