Robotics Kits for Inner City Engineers

My Project

My seniors took a basic course in electronics last year. But, this year, they have been learning programming and will have an introduction to microcontrollers. As my engineering program grows at my school, my goal is to continually push my seniors to do more and more with what I have taught them. As seniors, students choose their own projects which they will present at the end of the school year. This DonorsChoose.org project covers the materials needed for a senior project involving robotic cars, a walking robot, and an LED mask!

A core educational belief of mine is that all education should be tied to something a student is passionate about; unfortunately, this type of individualized educational practice is expensive to implement.

This project helps several of my seniors build and program something of their own choice (not something I mandated) and allows them to choose their own path for their education. Based on their projects, each student will be given an individualized curriculum and timeline allowing them to build and invent; that is the heart of what I believe STEM education should be. Creative. Individualized. Hands-On. With projects addressing real-world problems.

I believe project-based-learning activities are more meaningful and more effective.
