Robotics in the Classroom: Bringing Coding to Life!

My students need the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robot Kit for Kids because I want to provide opportunities for students to learn through project-based challenges and student-directed problem-based learning.

My Students

My students are sixth graders who come to school each day excited to learn about science and math. They love using hands-on math materials and performing experiments in science.

One quarter of my students are in special education for various learning disabilities.

Using hands-on learning materials is so helpful for engaging students who struggle with understanding important science and math concepts. The typical student in my class reads and performs math tasks at between a first and fourth grade level.

My Project

Robotics in the classroom gives students the opportunity to learn coding while using a physical problem-solving tool. Using a LEGO MINDSTORM will allow students' code to come to life in ways they can see, hear, touch and even chase across the room. I hope that by introducing robotics instruction to my 21st Century Learning class that it will ignite a passion for learning, both inside and outside the classroom by making it relevant and fun.

There are several benefits to providing opportunities for students to learn classroom competencies through project-based challenges and student directed problem based learning.

Some of these benefits include exposing students to new interests, teaching coding and the scientific method through hands-on projects, applying math and science to real-world problems, teaching the engineering and design process through mechanical design and building, cultivating 21st century work-life skills, and integrating innovative skill building and strategic thinking.

Finally, my school encourages students to learn at high levels, but also respect their classmates and teachers. Robotics instruction will allow me to help students practice a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. My ultimate goal is to create a community of collaborative problem-solvers and inspire students to be life-long learners.
