Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These high school students come from a small agriculture-based community on the Yakama Nation Reservation where all students receive free breakfast and lunch due to our low household incomes. They have been building robots since 6th grade for the VEX Robotics and TSA VEX Robotics competitions. COVID not only put a halt to their education, but also to the program Robot Mesh which they used to program their robot. It is no longer being updated so they have been running their robots with an outdated system.

Their dream is to become engineers, and building robots, learning how to code, and participating in competitions are the first steps in getting there.

Our small budget makes it difficult to stay competitive with teams from bigger cities with many more resources.

This year, the robotics team is learning how to code with Visual Studio Code, a program that can’t be run on our school district's Chromebooks. The team is currently using a home computer to program their robot, but obviously can’t take the computer with them when they travel.

This laptop is a vital tool to stay competitive because there are always on-site adjustments at the competitions that need to be made. It has Windows 11 which can support Visual Studio Code and can fold down flat with a pen that can be used to draw a picture of the robotics field to help strategize with their alliance team, a key component in any competition.

With our competition season in full swing, this laptop will be a stepping stone to success!
