How often do you find yourself looking to use your iPhone, iPad or computer as a quick resource? In the age of 21st century learning, it's become a tool for education. I have approximately 550 students in grades PK-5 in the makerspace/innovation lab. Each of these students posses their own unique gifts.
My students are readers, dreamers, artists, poets, graphic designers, engineers, scientists, writers, philosophers and more!
One thing remains in common with all of my students - they are highly motivated and take ownership of their learning as problem solvers and critical thinkers. Our school is a family - we work as one unit - teachers, support staff, administration, students, parents. Together, we do whatever we need to do to provide the best for our students.
My Project
This year will be my first year in our school's new Makerspace. This has been my passion project that I developed shortly after receiving news of my new position. This space was created to encourage the development of 21st century college and career readiness skills. Within the space, students have multiple opportunities to engage in hands on, project based learning inquiries.
Makerspaces provide an environment in which children gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover - a Makerspace allows students to explore their own interested; learn to use tools and materials, both physical and virtual; and develop creative projects.
With the addition of an iPad, students will be able to conduct research correlating to their projects They will be able to use apps such as Wonder Workshop to code their Dot & Dash robots. In the near future, students will be able to use the iPads to create 3-D prototypes on a 3-D printer. The opportunities are endless. It supports students with multiple learning styles and gives them a domain to work with that they're already familiar with. Technology is the gift that keeps on giving...
