Our school is a small middle school with a diverse group of students from rural, suburban, mountain and inner city backgrounds. We are a STEM school that strives to create learners who can think critically and creatively. Our teachers' focus on helping students develop strong problem solving skills and the ability to approach a new task, activity, or situation with an open and inquiring mindset.
Our students come to us with many different experiences, interests, and backgrounds and learn to work together to create new understanding of not just academic content but also each other and the world around them.
Our STEM focus provides teachers and students with a framework to integrate collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills into all classrooms and activities.
My Project
My students love to work with Legos. Lego Robotics gives them the chance to work with something familiar and fun while expanding their problem solving, cooperative learning, and programming skills. I currently have just 2 robot bricks for my class. This is not enough for each child to have adequate time building and programming as multiple groups have to share one brick.
With new Spike Prime sets, I will be able to break the students up into smaller groups so they can build robots and learn how to program them without waiting for other groups.
When students are learning to program, large groups mean students learn less. Groups have to build a robot, work on a program, try it out, and then wait to make improvements because other groups need use the same brick to build and try their program. These long waits mean students rush and can't make the small changes needed for continuous improvement.
