Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students from 14 to 18 years of age in a up and coming Robotics program here at our school. Here we give the students the tools to explore and expand their knowledge in an ever growing Technological job market. My students are encouraged to explore new ideas, and think outside the box to solve real world problems related to our robotics competition. This program provides students a way to address academic and social struggles that often plague them. Some students have real awkwardness speaking with unfamiliar people they meet, this engineering and Robotics program focuses its aim at building reading comprehension and social connections, while at the same time, building VEX Robots geared to complete a specific task while in competition. Initially, students introduce themselves and talk about their experiences with technology and engineering. Put into small groups to build their robot, they exercise social skills, reading comprehension, and engineering aptitude. As time progresses, they become more comfortable working together and reaching out to other groups for advice. Students who have been in the class for more than a year often take on a leadership role, helping other groups through the design process and encourage them.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to design their robots using CAD software and print out their plan for the construction phase.

In the beginning stages of building a robot the students have great ideas about what they want to design and are capable of using the CAD software to model their ideas.

We currently have no way for them to get a paper print to follow when they are building so a printer would be nice! Usually their first "prototype" has to be adjusted and several stages of planning and remodeling tale place we go through a few designs.

Additionally some of the process will require that they custom cut metal parts for their robots and the rotary tools are the best way to achieve that. Also the portability of a rotary tool ensures that adjustments can be made on site when we go to competitions.
