Mrs. Gayhart from Harrisonburg VA is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the opportunity to use technology in the classroom with the Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity sets.
I teach in a low-income poverty school district. My students come to school with many needs that exceed the academic curriculum. Many of our students have not had the experiences, but when they come in the door they are in a place where learning comes through dance, music, body movement and visual art. As we look at the world around us, technology has an important role in our daily lives.
I want my kindergartners to know how to think, not what to think!
I believe they can do it and I must make sure they believe they can do it.
Creativity and art Integration has been an important part of my work in the classroom. However, as we look at today’s world, technology is all around us. Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for kids to understand and be able to work with the technology around them. My project, Robot Reflections, is a collaboration of creativity, technology and critical thinking.
In Robot Reflections, students will use Code & Go Robot Mouse (Coding STEM mouse) to build critical thinking skills.
Students will use coding to…
*retell a story including characters, setting, and events
*letter/ number identification
*letter sound identification
*tell/write a story with a beginning, middle and end
*explore maps and their function/purpose
*making groups of ten
*learn life cycles of plants and animals
*tell/write how-to directions
*sound & blending words
*spelling words…
…and more. The Robot Mouse can be used to teach and practice and evaluate in literacy, math, science, social studies and art activities!
Our objective of Robot Reflections is to build and strengthen critical thinking by utilizing the exact same process in coding. Both coding and critical thinking share these steps:
1) identify a task
2) analyze that problem/task
3) come up with initial solutions
4) test
5) reflect and refine
Students will need to identify issues and try different tactics until they find a strong solution.
Students will be able to reflect on their thinking as the robot follows the students’ coding…Robot Reflections!
Using coding as an integral part of learning will provide many opportunities to think differently and deeper about problems and possible solutions. The breadth of possibilities during the coding creation process will allow students to practice their critical thinking skills in each activity.
