Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of the students in my classroom need extra support and as a result my morning reading block is full of pull outs, plug ins, small groups, and one-on-one reteaches. As a result, we are not all doing the same activity at the same time.

My class is a group of willing learners who are eager to please.

Our community is low income and many of the students in my class receive free and reduced lunch. Many of the students in my class are below grade level in reading and need various forms of instructional support throughout the day such as speech, special ed, guidance, small group support, and one-on-one help. Always excited for the chance to go to centers they love the independent time to practice what they have learned and reinforce important reading skills.

My Project

I love using centers in my classroom. So much of my day is spent explicitly teaching and guiding my students that I love setting them free to stretch their minds and take control of their own learning. Many of the centers in my class were hand made by me, and as much as I love finding ways to use them, they simply aren't as flashy and engaging as newer 'learning toys'. I am looking to add a few new reading and literacy centers to the ones in my room either as stand-alone new centers, or as a way to make my older centers more interesting and engaging. The centers I have selected will work specifically on target skills that my class needs in order to find success this year in second grade and as life-long readers.

This project is important to me because as a life-time lover of reading I feel it is my job to pass that excitement for a new book on to my students.

These centers will help make my students better readers, and when they stop seeing reading as a difficult and frustrating chore, and more as an engaging learning activity, I know I will be closer to making them life time readers as well.
