Help me give my students exciting nonfiction to inspire their love of reading!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Maye's classroom raised $659

My Students
Our students are excited to learn, curious, innovative, playful, kind and fun! Our classroom is comprised of forty-eight 2nd and 3rd-grade students at a charter school in southern California. We do a lot of projects with partners or in cooperative groups of four so students learn how to work as a team.
We are also a magnet school so students from many different backgrounds and cultures get to know each other.
We set high standards and enjoy the journey to reach them.
My Project
The most interesting and inspiring stories are the ones from real life! Our students love to read fiction. We want to capture their love of reading and expand it to nonfiction as well. Previous classes have thoroughly enjoyed the Scholastic News magazines. They are engaging with their colorful photos, current news articles and science stories. They expand our students' knowledge outside our classroom door with articles about different countries. Historically, the quietest time in our classroom is right after we pass out these magazines. Another benefit is the conversations they have with each other about what they read. I'll hear them walking out to recess asking their classmates, "Hey, did you read that article about the boy who created his own prosthetic arm out of Legos? So cool!" The Scholastic News magazines add to our students knowledge, curiosity and enjoyment of reading.
