My students need 13 books that address common teen safety issues such as violence, crime, and other risky behaviors.

My Students

Violence, crime, alcohol, drugs and gangs are a reality in urban high schools.

Most of our 1300 high school students come from non-white, lower-income, urban households where they know at least one person affected by some form of violence, risky behavior or abuse.

We are concerned that teenagers who engage in one risky behavior are more likely to be involved in others. Risky behaviors among teens are prevalent and can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs, so identifying and dealing with problematic issues as they arise can help teens be safer and healthier.

My Project

Our students are bright and curious. However, during their teen years, they could be potentially "at risk" for some kinds of risky behavior such as gangs, crime, or alcoholism. Our library would like to acquire a collection of 13 books that deals with these topics.

Having resources that address issues such as gangs, crime, rape, violence, drugs, and alcohol could inspire and change many of our students' lives.

Adolescents who engage in one form of risky behavior, like drug or alcohol use, are likely to engage in other risky behaviors like self-harm or having unprotected sex, but often times these behaviors are not discussed during a medical or mental health exam.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
