Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students, like many teens today, will tell you that they have never read an entire book. For some it is because they haven't been matched with a book or an author they love or they've never seen themselves in a book because they never knew that someone wrote a book about a topic they are interested in or a situation that they've lived through. Once they do find the right book, they light up and engage with the story.
It is always amazing to hear a student who at the beginning of the year said they hated to read talk about a book with which they have found a lasting connection.
My school's students are approximately 75% minority, most students are from low-income families, and we are low-performing according to the state test. Our goal is to graduate students who are ready for college or a career. These students are just waiting to find independence and develop a love of reading.
My Project
Our classroom library needs additional titles. This year, I am reaching out for community support to grow the library. The library supports students as we read each day for 10 minutes in class and will encourage them to read for 20 minutes each day at home.
Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.
- Jim Rohn, Business Philosopher
At times, in the middle of reading, if you decide you don't want to read the book you had in hand - which is something great readers do - having more books close by means that you can get right back to reading. I like to allow my students the opportunity to choose from books in the classroom to best use their reading time.
This project will allow us to add books which students have requested. My students have a definite desire for Sci-Fi/Fantasy titles, books that are about teens, and graphic novels.
