This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in the historic city of Alexandria, VA. We are a pre-K through fifth grade Title I elementary school, and we also host several citywide special education programs. Our school community is filled with dedicated educators, wonderful administrators and some of the best students in the world.

My students are spirited, creative and passionate learners.

They come from countries around the world and speak many languages, but when they enter our school, they are all family. Music is a universal language that everyone can learn and enjoy. This year, learning is going to look and sound wildly different than ever before! My goal is to provide my students a nurturing environment where they learn to take risks, challenge themselves and work cooperatively with their classmates, and to give them the tools to express themselves fully.

My Project

As our school district begins planning a return to in-person learning, our students need materials that can be easily cleaned between students.

Our school is well equipped with unpitched instruments such as drums, triangles, sticks, and shakers that we use to play rhythms and create sound effects.

However, we have far fewer instruments that can play a melody, and most of those are large wooden xylophones that can be damaged by harsh cleaners.

These resonator bells build mallet skills and can be safely cleaned between students. In a time when it is not safe to sing, we need as many melodic instruments as possible to allow our students full access to a comprehensive music curriculum. Extra mallets allow each student to have their own pair through the entire lesson.
