Help me give my students the Benchmark Assessment System 1 so I can observe specific reading behaviors and then interpret and use that data to plan meaningful, responsive teaching.
Do you remember the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? You couldn't wait to curl up in your favorite reading spot to find out what happens next. I teach in a wonderful, low-income, elementary school located in Illinois. It's home to just over 430 amazing students who participate in the Title I program and the dual-language academy.
Even with the economic and social-emotional challenges that many of our students face, they come to school each day and are curious, enthusiastic, and creative.
I teach in a small corner of this amazing school. I share my classroom with another literacy specialist and house all of the books available for teachers to use in their small group instruction for grades 1-6. My classroom, also known as the book room, is an inviting space for teachers and students to learn to love the love of reading.
My Project
I recently received the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System 2 and has provided myself and the teachers at my school with valuable information for our 3rd-6th grade readers. The Benchmark Assessment System 1 will complete the set and provide us with the same valuable resources and information for our beginning readers at 1st and 2nd grade.
Research proves that matching readers to appropriate books is crucial for reading success.
The Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment System Kit will make a difference in the lives of my students because it will be used to identify the instructional and independent reading levels of my students with accuracy and reliability.
Successful reading intervention requires consistent progress monitoring. This valuable resource would provide me with the ability to assess my students at any time using the 30 books (15 fiction and 15 nonfiction) and accompanied comprehension assessments.
This information will contribute to my knowledge of children and how they develop as readers. I will be able to more accurately assess students' reading strengths and determine teaching points for direct instruction.
Should this project be funded, the teachers at my school will now truly be able to meet all students' needs by obtaining this assessment system and the multitude of resources provided along with it.
