Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Do we have to leave?" Our students are funny, compassionate, and imaginative children that enjoy exploring new skills and developing their literacy skills. They are predominantly English Language Learners (ELLs) and attend an elementary school in the Kensington section of northern Philadelphia.

The room buzzes throughout the day as they laugh and share with their peers.

They are a thoughtful, loving, and hardworking bunch, excited to learn and grow. While they are motivated by their dreams and engaged by the opportunities presented to them, due to economic challenges within the community, school, and district, our resources are limited. As their teacher, I struggle to provide sufficient and enriching supplies that will support small group learning. At our school, we are resourceful and do with what we have, but our students deserve and require more.

My Project

I currently co-teach the ELL third grade class and have been pleasantly surprised to learn that I will loop with them, meaning I will move up with them to the fourth grade! This experience is not only rewarding for me, it is also a professional opportunity to grow in my knowledge and skills in teaching across grades.

The resources I am requesting will be regularly used and consulted in order to enhance a deeper understanding of common core standards and the new content I will be teaching.

The Number Talks text will teach me how to further mathematical discussion and confidence by providing sample math problems for students to solve, show me how to facilitate their discussion, and obstacles that I may encounter. The other texts are literacy based and will further develop my understanding and expectation for my fourth grade students in reading, writing, and vocabulary building. I will use each these books to help the lesson planning process in both the content that they are learning as well as their language development.
