Rewind to My Parent's Teenage Years

My Students

Welcome to Ms K's sculpture class! In our class we learn to carve, create, and sculpt many different materials and textures. Students are never bored and are always excited to create original artwork.

When the clean up bell rings, I have to go around and force students to stop working because they are so interested and focused in their work.

Since we live in Los Angeles area, I have a very diverse group of students in my classroom, and we all learn so much from one another. Around half of the class consists of seniors because their schedule is more free to take elective classes. By the time these students are able to take sculpture, they are very eager to start learning and experiencing 3D art. It is also great to have many 12th graders in the class because younger students get to interact with the older students, and a wonderful environment is created!

My Project

Many of my teenage students spend little to no time talking to their parents about things other than everyday conversations (example: school, sports, family members, chores, etc.). With this project, my students would need to interview at least one parent or guardian to find out more about their teenage years. The parents or guardians would need to answer questions about their hobbies, habits, and interactions in middle and high school and tell 3 stories about their teenage years and the student would need to listen carefully to hear and write down details of their stories. Then the student will need to sketch out their parent/guardian's memory on a piece of paper, then create a sculpture of them in that memory (using wire, masking tape and paper mache).

This project will allow my students to have a memorable conversation with their parent or guardian to learn a little bit more about them and see that even though they are adults, they can still be very relatable.

I'm hoping that with this project, students will feel more comfortable to ask more questions and learn about their parents even more in the future. Parent/child bond is very important and students need strong adult influences to become successful as adults.
