My students need fun Friday reward activities such as magnetic sand and games like Operation and Buy It Right Money Game to motivate them to meet classroom expectations academically and behaviorally.
My students are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in a self-contained class. We do all subjects in our classroom. If all the students do their work and meet their behavioral expectations, we have reward time at the end of the day. This is reinforcement for a good day both academically and behaviorally.
The 7 students I have need more one on one attention than most; to learn good school behavior.
Many have anger, attention, emotional issues, or abuse from their past. These students need a lot of love, consistency, direction, motivation, patience, and peace within. The goal is to return them back to their home school with the general education population. The students work daily on earning points to advance levels earning more privileges. My school administration and staff are very supportive of us. We are located in the 4th largest city in America and the largest school district in the city. We are on 2 busy streets and are land locked; giving us little recreation space. All of our students are on free breakfast. The state test scores at our school were very good: earning 5 out of 6 distinctions.
My Project
I am a new teacher to this school and program. As I cleaned out the room this summer, I tried to salvage and piece together parts of games and puzzles. I was not very successful. Our program involves reward time for time on task daily. With each level (there are 4) comes more freedom and interaction with others. It is meant to motivate these kids to work hard and think before they act or speak. When I asked the head of the program for some incentives and games, I was told they only buy my type of classroom supplies every 2 years and last year the room was stocked. I spent money of my own to get us started with reinforcers. The items I am requesting are for individual, partner, and group use. These games, stencils, and magnetic sand will help with reinforcing and motivating appropriate behavior and work completion, for placement back with the general population
Receiving these magnetic sand and games like Operation and Buy It Right Money Game would set up our classroom for years to come.
Kids get tired of the same old games. Why should they work when they can put their head down and sleep? I would now have a lot of motivation and leverage. New and exciting games and activities will motivate my students to work hard, choose their battles, keep hands and comments to themselves, and how to make good choices. The games will also help with social skills and learning how to be a good winner and loser
