Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am seeking funding for materials and rewards to incorporate positive behavior modification strategies within the classroom. I am a third year teacher for Special Education Middle School students in East Harlem. Last year I had great success in fostering a nurturing learning environment within the classroom and especially between the students themselves. I attribute this success to keeping my attention on positive behavior and ignoring or removing students whose behavior was disruptive. Having a Master's degree in Behavior Management, I feel that instilling respectful behavior within the classroom is paramount. When children are respected, they respect themselves and in turn, respect their peers, community, school and teachers. This positive cycle leads to a sense of values. Most importantly valuing themselves and hence their education. I am against food as a reward. As small and as trivial as the actual items appeared, all students who received a reward were thrilled with the tangible acknowledgement of their efforts and the students who did not get a reward were always interested in the item that was received. Children require attention and act out in order to receive it. I aim to acknowledge both tangibly and publicly positive behavior. My goal is for all students to act their best always and receive all of the positive attention that they need and deserve. Thank you for understanding the value that acknowledging good within a child serves to mold their future.
