My Students

My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. Our school has been fortunate enough so far to continue to meet in person this year. I teach over 50 students each day in our reading intervention program. As the reading specialist, I also have responsibility for all of the literacy programs at our school.

It is my goal to instill in the children a love of reading and a motivation to read outside of school.

I have found that my struggling readers benefit from practicing at home. It is also evident from our data that all students, regardless of reading level, progress more quickly the more they read.

My Project

Each month, all students at our school are encouraged to read for 20-30 minutes at home every night. When they meet this goal, they are able to attend a special "Reading Rocks" party, and their names are put into a drawing for other prizes donated by local businesses.

We would like to encourage our reading "rock stars" by letting them each choose a book of their own to read at home over and over again.

Not only would these books reward those who have consistently met their reading goals, but these prizes would also help incentivize reading at home in the future for our other students.
