This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach English Language Arts and US History to 53 eager to learn 5th graders. Our school is a Title I school and the students come from many different backgrounds--economically, culturally and socially. As we study history, my students are motivated to learn more about these topics through literature. Our interactive read aloud time is one of their favorite times of the day and our chance to share our love of reading and learning.
My goal is to create an atmosphere of excitement about reading by providing my students with texts that meet their academic needs and interest levels.
My Project
My 5th grade students will be starting a unit on the American Revolution following our English Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum. Students will read texts about the American Revolution to understand the decisions and choices colonists made leading up to and during the Revolutionary War. This unit will ensure that all of my students read, understand and express their understanding of complex grade level text.
Students will express their understanding of the concept of "taking sides" and how those in conflict with one another can share common ground even when they have different points of view on an issue.
