This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach middle and high school band in a high-needs community. The school district is very small and in an urban setting. Our students all receive free lunch and breakfast. Even though the school and community have financial difficulties, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. The financial hardships do not interfere with their desire to learn and be the best they can be.

I am very fortunate to teach in a district where the students want to excel and work very hard.

My Project

Sometimes you find amazing things when you begin cleaning out old storage rooms. I recently discovered a sousaphone in a storage closet that we began to clean. The sousaphone needs some work in order to become playable.

For the first time in my teaching experience, I am going to have 2 sousaphone players for marching band.

This is so exciting! The only issue we have right now, is making sure they both have a sousaphone to play. The sousaphone we found needs to be cleaned and serviced. It also has quite a few dents in the body. These repairs will make it playable for my tuba player. My tuba players cannot wait to step out on the football field with their sousaphones!
