My Students

Chairman Mao Zedong, quoting an ancient Chinese Proverb, once said, "Women hold up half the sky." Little did he know that a young girl would hold up her half and so much more. In a time of revolution and confusion, it was the children, both girls and boys, that became the true revolutionaries.

I am privileged to teach fifth grade at a wonderful school in North Carolina.

The school is a high poverty school that has struggled in years past. But we are focused and dedicated to learning, and have seen the students continue to improve every year. The students I teach are highly intelligent, but often have struggles outside of the classroom that interfere with their achievement. What they need is a vision for their future, the realization that they can each make a difference in the world. I want them to understand that they are vital members of society, that their voice counts, that they will one day have the power to change their world.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom set of the novel, Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang. This book is a true account of a young girl's experience during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It tells of her struggles to stay loyal to her family and country and how she discovers what she truly believes. I believe that this story would be amazing for my students to read. I want them to know and understand what the Cultural Revolution was, and also to understand the role children played in the Revolution. Ji-li's story is inspirational and would show my students, many years later, how one child can in fact be revolutionary. Ji-li had to overcome so many hardships and struggles, all while learning who she was, were she came from, and what she truly wanted to be. While she may not have changed the whole of China, she brought about change within herself and within her family.

I believe that in reading and understanding Ji-li's story, my students will begin to understand the true change that one young person can bring.

I want them to realize that they have to know who they are inside, what they believe, and why they believe it. Ultimately, they have to have the courage to stand up for their beliefs, no matter the cost. When they can do this, they too can change the world. They can be revolutionary.
