Teaching math to second graders can be challenging. Students need to be actively engaged in learning math processes. The use of manipulatives gives students hands-on experiences in learning. It is important to build a strong foundation of math skills to prepare students for real life experiences
Our school is a rural school nestled in the majestic mountains of West Virginia.
We serve 279 students in preschool through fifth grade with a large percentage of our students on or below the poverty level. The students, parents, and staff of our school understand the importance of reading and math. In our Strategic Plan, we have goals to improve reading, math, and technology instruction for all of our students.
Our math class consists of twenty-one students. Students receive a minimum of sixty minutes of math instruction each day. Instruction begins with a quick review of a basic skill that has already been covered in class. The students then participate in a whole group math lesson related to the objective of the day. Afterwords, they are divided into pairs and small groups for additional instruction. Pairs of students complete math activities at workstations. Other students work with the teacher to remediate, to review, or to enhance the lesson.
My Project
These math resources will improve the quality of math instruction in our second grade classroom. By having additional hands-on materials, students will no long need to share limited resources; such as rulers, clocks, and thermometers. While working in pairs or small groups, students will be able to explore the magic of math through colorful and exciting materials and activities. Students will learn the importance of understanding place value and the base ten system. They will learn how to tell time and count money. Students will also learn how to measure objects with a ruler, how to measure temperature with a thermometer, how to add and subtract numbers, and how to make geometic shapes.
Our second grade class would truly appreciate your support of this project.
Your donation will provide much needed instructional resources to improve and enhance our math curriculum. Since these materials are reusable, your donation will impact students for many years.
