Our school is a rural school nestled in the majestic mountains of West Virginia. We serve 279 students in preschool through fifth grade with a large percentage of our students on or below the poverty level. The students, parents, and staff of our school understand the importance of reading and math. In our Strategic Plan, we have goals to improve reading, math, and technology instruction for all of our students. Our math class consists of twenty-one students. Students receive a minimum of sixty minutes of math instruction each day. Instruction begins with a quick review of a basic skill that has already been covered in class. The students then participate in a whole group math lesson related to the objective of the day. Afterwords, they are divided into pairs and small groups for additional instruction. Pairs of students complete math activities at workstations. Other students work with the teacher to remediate, to review, or to enhance the lesson.
