My 8th graders live in a city that was once filled with bustling mills and factories and was a beacon of hope for immigrants pursuing the American Dream. Our city now faces socioeconomic hardships. The ones most affected by this are the children; 59% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 70% qualify as having high needs, and 20% have a first language which is not English.
Despite these hardships, our community is a family first community; it is a place where our students feel safe and cared for.
Our school is a community PK-8 School where many of my students' younger siblings attend and where most of my 8th graders have been learning for all of their academic lives.
As we are quickly approaching a year of a pandemic and isolation, students are returning to school in cohorts. A safety protocol we use is to sanitize when students enter and exit the classroom. We also wipe off our own desks at the end of the day. Lastly, we are using Chromebooks for every class. As you can imagine, the dust and fingerprints collect pretty quickly.
Please help provide N95 masks, individual sanitizer for each student, and supplies to keep our classroom safe and clean.
