My students are energetic, creative, and eager to learn. I teach a first-grade classroom that is composed of students that come from low-income families. Many of my students have experienced some form of trauma in their short lifetime. They come to school needing so many things! The best way to help my students is to create a classroom that is warm and inviting and helps them feel safe. When they feel safe they are able to reach their fullest potential.
When school started in September we had to quickly adapt to a virtual setting. This meant students learning via computer and lessons being taught online. There was little time to prepare families and students for this transition. My students and I learned together as we figured out our digital classroom. There were some bumps and some triumphs along the way but we have been learning and growing. We have made it through the first trimester and find that there is a chance that we will be returning to the classroom after the holidays. This means that my class will be split into two groups and half of the class will attend at a time for two days a week. Again we will embrace this change and adapt. This change will require some tools for success as well as for safety.
During this pandemic, our laptops have become our most flexible learning tool.
However, with half a class in the room, it can be loud. Headphones will become a necessary tool for concentration and classroom management. Since students will be in school two days a week and working at home three days a week they will be using binders to keep track of their unfinished work, important notes, and a communication log with their grownups. This communication tool will be a great form of communication between home and school. The other items I am requesting are supplies that we will use for activities in class so that students do not have to share and can keep their own tools in their supply pouch.
I am asking for snacks so I can send a few things home with my students for the days that they are not in school to offset what I spend out of my pocket on snacks.
