Makerspaces are intended to tap into the different interests and learning styles of students. This helps to develop the next generation of problem solvers. In a makerspace students have numerous opportunities to discover, assemble, construct, test and explore "outside the box" thinking. Through creative exploration and purposeful play students become critical thinkers and inventors while collaborating with their peers. Donating to my project will allow me to purchase the materials needed for my students to demonstrate their creative thinking. Each month I will have a list of ideas that students can look to for inspiration on what to make. They will then use the materials in the makerspace to create their project. Some examples are: creating a blueprint for a new playground, making a vehicle that rolls, make a maze or tower, make a bridge, make a haunted house, make a boat that floats, make a trap for a gingerbread man, design a board game, make a winter home for an animal, make a catapult, make a parachute, make a greenhouse, make a container to keep an egg from breaking and make a treehouse. Students will make their creations out of construction paper, pipe cleaners, clay, paint, glue, paper scraps and whatever supplies they can gather. In addition to these open ended ideas there are some items that allow students to build. Students can use the magna tiles, the bristle builders, crystal climbers and the vehicle design center to build different structures. The Makerspace will regularly incorporate and reinforce skills from numerous content areas. Problem solving, science concepts, math skills and language art skills. Finished creations will be displayed in the classroom as well as outside the classroom so that others can see the great inventions of my students.
