My Students

Our classroom library is boring. Presently, we make a walking trip to the bookstore every month just to get a good book to read together as a class. Not everyone buys a book for a number of reasons, including not being able to afford it.

I have a very challenging group of fourth graders that I am trying to motivate to read through some good books.

They are practicing their reading stamina for the upcoming New York State ELA exams in the spring. When a book is good, I do not have to fight them to read. It is automatic. Then, they practice their reading skills with all the books they encounter and they feel accomplished.

My Project

The students enjoyed reading the first book in the sequel, One Crazy Summer. They were able to relate to the three children in the story and have rich discussion about the story plot and the characters. Thanks to some generous donors, One Crazy Summer will be in the school for years to come. All the students have met the author over the years and she discussed the sequel briefly with them. Now, it is available and everyone wants to read it. I am requesting 36 copies of PS Be Eleven! As with the first book, the students will engage in many activities to highlight the book so that others will be excited to read it. It will give the students a glimpse into events from the not so distant past. Some of the students will even make personal connections to the story that may help change their lives.

This project is important because we need to always build literacy in our children's lives if we are going to produce literate and productive members of society.

Once they fall in love with reading, there is no telling what they can do or where they can go.
