Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families who struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
These UNO cards, checker games, coloring books, markers, drawing pencils, and sketchbooks will give my sixth graders something fun to do on the weekends and during longer breaks from school. Many of my students have shared with me that they don't own any books, art supplies, or games at home and often just sleep or watch TV during the weekends. When teachers ask them to write about their weekends, these students feel sad and have nothing to write about.
These games and art supplies will foster creative expression, boost self esteem, and increase cooperation with siblings as they share quality "unplugged" time using the scented colorful markers, drawing pencils, blank comic books, sketch books, and coloring books, or taking turns playing an interactive game of checkers or UNO.
Students will be able to purchase these engaging games and art supplies from our school store by competing their work and showing good citizenship skills. They will be able to take these games and art supplies home to enjoy so they will always have something to do at home besides watch TV or take naps. My students will learn financial literacy skills when they find an item in the store that they wish to earn and then save up to purchase the item. These positive experiences with hands-on games and access to art supplies at home will make even the rainiest weekend a happier time for my students.
