This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a first year teacher, I decided to run my classroom as an economy. This helped me take a different approach in managing behavior in a tangible way. There was a lot of trial and error, but ultimately, the students loved it! It was a great way for them to practice so many life skills, from budgeting to making good decisions. Since then, I've continued to run a classroom economy and the incentives immensely contributed to its success.
Students are given class cash, they have jobs, pay rent, receive bonuses, and occasionally have to pay a fine.
They understand the true meaning of "hard work pays off." It is a constant real-world application, and students run the majority of it. They love to earn money and are constantly managing their cash by counting it. They are practicing life and math skills without knowing it!
The students work hard to collect class cash so that they can splurge at our very own student store, Smalmart. (I take no credit for the name. My first class decided it was a small, humble version of Walmart.) Running a classroom economy allows students to think about supply and demand, financial goals, and counting money. This helps them not only learn about financial responsibility but also financial goals and saving.
This project will help me in continuing a classroom economy with my future students in the year 2024-25. They, too, will learn about earning, saving, and spending. Your generosity will immensely assist in restocking the "empty aisles" at Smalmart. These items range from stickers to pencils, fun erasers, and stress-relieving toys. Please help my new staff at Smalmart restock these items. My upcoming students will soon find out about the opening of Smalmart and will be pumped to save for their personal interests!
