Hello, First of all, I want to thank you for all that you are doing. If you are reading this then you must be an angel. I am a first year teacher in the Chicago Public Schools at Pulaski Academy. I teach 5th grade and am self-contained; therefore, I teach all the subjects. Pulaski Academy is mostly made up of Hispanic students of low-income families. The majority of my students take the CTA bus just to get to school and so I try to make their experience a long-lasting and impressive one. I know that their lives are filled with hardships, sadness, and hard work. I would love to make their life a bit easier. Some of my students have never even been to a library before!!! I am requesting a set of dictionaries (30) and at least one set of encyclopedias. The reason I am asking for this is because my students are so eager to learn but unfortunately we do not have the resources to foster their curiosity. We have worked so hard to get to a point where learning is not a chore but a passion. I am so proud of them because their interests are so deep and unique. I want to be able to have resources within the classroom that will allow us to research a topic as it comes up in discussion. I try to incorporate as many of their interests into daily lesson plans. I hope that someone will see how important and beneficial these books will be to my students. It will not only enrich their minds but hopefully their lives and their dreams as well.
