I am a third-grade teacher in a small, Brooklyn neighborhood school. My students love to learn and are eager to come to school every day. School this year is different as they all have opted in for remote learning. When they first enter third grade, they are nervous. It is very different from second grade. They are at the halfway mark of elementary school and need to become more independent to prepare for the rest of their academics.
My students love to express themselves and effectively participate in class.
They are enthusiastic and full of energy. They are always ready to go on a new learning adventure. My goal is to give them the best learning experience and make it a memorable year.
My students have diverse backgrounds and range in academic ability from non-English to advanced learners and general education as well as special education students. My students are heterogeneously grouped. I believe the more engaged my students are, the better outcomes they will have.
My Project
One challenge my students are having is learning how to write complete sentences. Most of their time is spent on Google Classroom and completing Slides and other online assignments. In this environment, they have regressed in both handwriting and language usage due to the easily available spell check and grammar features on technology devices.
Help my students learn core writing skills by having the correct tools to write one sentence at a time.
First, the students will begin by building sentences from word strips that I will provide. The sentence strips will provide the students with a resource to write a complete sentence. Magnetic wipe off boards will be used to build sentences using magnetic word tiles that I have available. They will also be able to write full sentences. Post-it notes will be used to write more than one sentence and used for note taking. Daily Language Practice Journals will be used to teach specific language skills and to reinforce what it learned throughout the day.
I strongly believe this hands on approach will help them retain information. Using these materials will make learning more fun and engaging. It will build their fine motor skills while increasing their language and literacy skills. This will also build their self confidence and ability to express themselves in writing as well as oral language skills, which will lead to positive mental health.
