This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach the BEST students in the school - the kids with Special Needs! My students come from diverse backgrounds and have particular needs such as sensory issues, deficits in fine and gross motor skills, gaps in receptive and expressive language, cognitive weaknesses, executive function concerns, self-help, and behavioral issues. While this may seem intense, it really just means that they need some extra support and a different way of teaching to learn new skills and be successful.
While their learning style may not be typical to that of their peers and they might have challenges that hinder progress these are some of the brightest and most resilient kiddos in the school!
They have amazing potential and with the appropriate tools and teaching, they can make significant gains academically, socially, and behaviorally!
These resources can help my students in various ways. The sensory items (chews, fidgets, etc) will support students with Autism and ADHD to stay focused and overstimulation. Many of my students also struggle with motor skills and thick pencils and/or writing grips help them in their writing. I have also asked for wobble seats, which are great for all kids who need to "wiggle while they work".
Besides focus and motor skills, my students also struggle with academics and some have social/behavioral.
Items like the letter matching manipulative, give students a different way to access the content. Teaching appropriate social skills is also an important part of the day and the different visuals and activities will help support students in learning these skills.
