My Students

My students come to African American History class with inquisitive minds and a genuine desire to make an impact on the world around them. I hope to provide them with a thorough understanding of the cruelty of chattel slavery in this country so they can challenge oppression and inequality today.

The students at my school are some of the most motivated young people I have ever had the opportunity to work with.

They truly place value on their education and put in the hard work to see results. In addition, they are extremely eager to have an impact on their local community and the world at large. Our class discussions on modern slavery revealed the depth of their empathy and desire to solve the difficult problems that persist in plaguing our world today. Finally, my students are committed to studying a topic deeply and with rigor. I know that they will reap the substantial rewards that come from wrestling with a challenging text like Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.

My Project

My students are going to begin an extended unit on slavery. A major component will be a focus on methods of resistance, self-preservation, and survival that slaves employed to cope with their enslavement. Harriet Jacob's courageous narrative will be our primary text for this portion of the unit. Students will learn that resistance to slavery took many forms and often required great courage. They will also be exposed to Jacobs' nuanced perspective on the life of a slave who escaped to the North. She sheds light on the vicissitudes by which a slave's fate could be dramatically altered and speaks to the unique hardships particular to the female experience of slavery. The book will provide the foundation for our class discussions, individual student reflections, and writing projects. In addition, students will be making digital documentaries on the text that incorporate primary source documents. These will be made available for viewing by their peers and other students.

The donation to supply the books for this project will greatly benefit my current 9th grade students.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is truly a memorable book that one will never forget, even long after high school. Additionally, the donation will allow me to continue to introduce this powerful text to students for years to come. Please help us make this goal a reality!
