Resiliency Skills Group for Middle Schoolers

My Students

The students at TMS are diverse ethnically and socio-economically. We are an IB school and draw from all around the city of Houston and the world. We are also a Title 1 campus and are in the heart of the fourth largest city in the nation.

Our students and staff are caring and strive to be kind.

It is ingrained in the culture of our school. Each eighth grader completes a service project to help make our community better. Our sixth and seventh grade students see the leaders of our school accomplish this and it sets the tone for the expectation of giving back.

I love that our students look out for each other and include one another. In a world that isn't always the most kind or caring, when I come to work I can focus on the job and service to these great students at Tanglewood Middle. They prove the exception every day, and it is a joy to be here.

My Project

Dr. Ait-Chalalet specializes in working with counseling groups in the schools. Students will learn to cope with adversity, grief, and trauma through this skills group.

Students participating in this age-appropriate counseling group will learn ways to overcome negative thinking through positive framing and a variety of creative outlets to build resiliency.

Some activities include drawing, writing, dancing, breathing exercises, and meditation. Dr. Ait-Chalalet and I have been trained in Trauma and Grief Component Therapy at Texas Children's Hospital.

Many of our students' families cannot afford counseling or cannot transport their child to a therapist weekly. This brings the therapist and the skills group to their school.
