My students need expanded access to books by renowned authors that will help them research the African American experience, particularly in the second half of the 20th Century.
Our public magnet school is located in an urban environment and our curriculum emphasizes intellectual rigor, critical thinking and robust investigation. Our 1,200 diverse students enjoy reading, writing and analyzing information.
My students are mentally gifted and very motivated to read widely, deeply and to carefully consider the information that they encounter.
Students need constant access to serious adult-level books throughout the year to use for research. Their ability to read well allows them to access high level texts that can help them make meaning from the research of others.
My Project
Each year, tenth grade students take a required African American history course. Each student is tasked with researching and writing a paper for National History Day. Students are asked to choose any topic in African American history about which they are interested in learning more. Because of this, students choose subjects that are meaningful and perhaps a bit mysterious to them.
By reading strong secondary sources, such as books written by noted historians, students will be able to better analyze the plethora of primary sources that they use to make conclusions about a topic in African American history.
Each year, many students choose topics that are related to Black Power and the Civil Rights Movement. I want students to have increased access to books that they can use to learn more content and to build their research and writing skills.
