Research the World: Infusion of Science Research

My students need Thermometers, Beakers, Safety Goggles, and other basic lab supplies for the coming months as we move towards more research based learning.

My Students

My students always ask "What if" questions and a lot of the times we have trouble answering these questions. My students would love to do more investigation- and lab-based projects, but we lack of the basic supplies because we are a new school in the Bronx with tight funding.

My students include many different individuals from many different backgrounds.

In some of my classes there are as many as 4 different native languages which are spoken. One thing that may students struggle with are science concepts when they can't try things out and experiment for themselves. I have found that every time I teach through experimentation and investigation students are more likely to learn and become excited about science both within and outside of the classroom. My school is a new school and beyond basic supplies and supports which are provided there is little money for other expenses and additional supplies. This has really caused a struggle for myself and my students as we would like to perform many experiments and investigations which require safety equipment and supplies which we simply do not have. While we do our best I would like to raise the bar for my students and allow them new opportunities.

My Project

My students will be using the thermometers, goggles, and beakers to perform research projects both within the classroom and after school as well. We will be starting an after school research club because there is such a large interest in science within our small growing school. My students will be able to begin setting up their own experiments, investigations, and inquiries into topics that might not be specifically on a test or evaluation. They will be able to discover science in a new way without multiple choice questions or test papers. The goal will be to create an atmosphere of learning which allows students to be free to investigate an interesting topic and build research skills that will not only serve them in science but in any discipline within school and beyond.

This project will improve my classroom by allowing students to complete more independent research projects and investigations.

It will allow students to choose their own topics and perform basic experiments. This project will allow experimentation to run side by side with research and allow students to better understand how their curiosity can change the world. These students will have new access to equipment they might have had access to, as this is a low income area with few resources.
