This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an intervention reading class for students who are struggling readers with a proficiency level more than one year below grade level. My reading intervention class has a focus on having a growth mindset and never giving up!

I teach approximately 70 students in a Title One school with 74% of the population qualifying for free and reduced lunch.

Many of my students come to me with challenges that their typical peers aren’t up against. I have a large number of students who struggle with a learning disability in reading comprehension and fluency, as well as students who are still acquiring English as a second language. Because literacy is such a cornerstone in education, my students rely on me to get them “caught up” as quickly and effectively as possible, so that they can meet academic expectations and goals in all of their classes, not just mine. The academic language in their math, science, and social studies classes can be challenging to say the least, so my students have to work twice as hard as their typical peers to meet basic milestones. My students’ determination and grit inspire me on a daily basis!

My Project

Students will be using six Chromebooks for enrichment experiences to increase the depth of the topics that are focused on in class. Because my students lack academic vocabulary and this often hinders their fluency and comprehension, students will create projects and portfolios that demonstrate a deeper understanding of current events as well as concepts in science and social studies. For example, our last unit was on immigration and the U.S. census. Students read passages and engaged in discussions on this topic which they found to be relevant and fascinating! Having technology tools in my classroom would create more in-depth experiences for my students to conduct research, propose solutions, and present ideas using education-based technology sites likes Prezi, Kid Blog, and VoiceThread. By exploring real issues that connect to daily life, my students will be motivated to explore the world they live in while acquiring literacy skills that will prepare them for their future.

My students come into my classroom everyday knowing that they face an uphill battle.

I believe that my students would be thrilled to have the opportunity to grow in their reading abilities by learning about the world around them. A Chromebook station in my classroom would facilitate an incredible experience of research, critical thinking, and sharing of new knowledge, all of which will support a love of literacy and confidence to speak, read, and write effectively as young adults.
