I teach approximately 70 students in a Title One school with 74% of the population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Many of my students come to me with challenges that their typical peers aren’t up against. I have a large number of students who struggle with a learning disability in reading comprehension and fluency, as well as students who are still acquiring English as a second language. Because literacy is such a cornerstone in education, my students rely on me to get them “caught up” as quickly and effectively as possible, so that they can meet academic expectations and goals in all of their classes, not just mine. The academic language in their math, science, and social studies classes can be challenging to say the least, so my students have to work twice as hard as their typical peers to meet basic milestones. My students’ determination and grit inspire me on a daily basis!
