"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" Albert Einstein once said. Indeed research is a very tedious, long, and intimidating process. For my students, this process becomes more discouraging when they cannot freely access their references.
Our school caters to economically disadvantaged students where their families can barely afford basic necessities, much less luxuries like the computer.
Being a Title I school, we receive federal funding, and serve more than 75-80% economically disadvantaged students. Yet, in spite of these challenges our students still dream of going to college. I specifically work with students who are dyslexic, IRLEN, and academically challenged. I believe that as long as these students are given the right resources to succeed they can have an equal chance and opportunity to be academically successful.
My Project
I am requesting three Samsung tablets so my students will have opportunities to find resources online for their research projects. Research is a college readiness skill that students need to hone. The lack of computers in our school hinders my students' access to the necessary online resources. Also the fact that most of my students are diagnosed with dyslexia and/or IRLEN makes a tablet a better tool for them since they are able to manipulate the fonts and also put a colored overlay over it. Dyslexia and IRLEN is a lifelong challenge these students have to deal with, but we can certainly make it better for them by giving them the necessary resources that will enable them to succeed academically and prepare them to be college bound.
I can't wait to see the glow in my students' eyes when they can finally use these tablets where the fonts of the words can be bigger, and the screen can be clearer with their colored overlay perfectly fitting it!
