What was your favorite part of the school day? For many of my students it's recess. They want to go out and play even when it's raining! Today's technological advances are creating children who are glued to their IPADs or tablets. Gone are the days of going to the park. My goal is to change this.
We are a Title I school that serves students from many diverse economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds.
Our students range from Pre Kindergarten up to 5th grade and include at least one special education class on each grade. More than 90% of our school population is free or reduced lunch. The students that I work with are energetic, athletic, and enthusiastic. They are a great bunch and really look forward to recess, which provides a break from their rigorous academic requirements throughout the day. We enjoy our time together.
My Project
Students work hard during the day and recess is the perfect time to incorporate some free social time. It is time for them to let loose and have some fun with their classmates. RECESS.... a favorite among many students! Students will learn how to be a good teammate, cooperate, share and learn about healthy living.
The bringing together of cultures through sports and games has a long standing tradition of working tremendously well. Whether in the Olympics or students respecting each other on a playing field, sports and games has the power to do so much good in the world. My goal is to provide the students with time to enjoy different sports and introduce them to various equipment they may not have had the opportunity to explore with before.
The requested materials will encourage exercise, team skills and team sportsmanship. It is my hope that they will motivate students to engage in sports teams in the future and help them exercise their bodies to live a healthier life. My students need outdoor equipment such as jump ropes, basketballs, soccer balls, hula hoops, bean bags and a tote bag for storage.
These materials will provide joy to these students.
A joy to experience a "normal" childhood. Many of our students take on responsibilities beyond their years such as caring for siblings and walking home alone. This will allow them an opportunity to just be kids!! They will also learn the social skills and healthy living aspects it will take to be a successful, healthy adult as I will personally dedicate time each day to provide recess for the entire 5th grade.
