This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Books can fuel our imagination and inspire a world of possibilities. Therefore, it is essential that our stories include characters that represent the students who are reading them. It is also important for students to see people from a similar background as the authors and illustrators of the books they read.
Our students are drawn to books featuring main characters that look like them.
They want to see themselves as detectives, superheroes, good friends, inventors, etc. Students always notice when I hang up new book covers featuring African American characters. Our young readers will point to the cover and ask "Where can I find that book?" Books with representative main characters are consistently among the most-often checked out books. This project will provide even more books featuring diverse characters so students have these mirrors to see themselves doing amazing things.
