This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the excitement of going to the library and picking out a new book? For many of my students this is a new experience because this is their first year having a regular school library program with weekly book checkout. I work in an urban school serving predominately low-income students, so the school library is their primary source of reading material. Many don't have access to high-quality books at home.
My students have quickly become enthusiastic library patrons.
They are excited to come in and check out books every week. They are starting to develop their identity as readers, and especially like books featuring characters who look like them. The students' passion for books and reading and fills the library with a buzz of positive energy every day.
My Project
Books can fuel our imagination and inspire a world of possibilities. Therefore, it is essential that our stories include characters that represent the students who are reading them. It is also important for students to see people who look like them as the creators of the books they read.
Because many of our students love to draw, this project focuses on creating a diverse collection of picture books illustrated by contemporary Black illustrators and artists.
This collection, when combined with the books already in the library, will allow each grade level to do an in-depth study of different Black illustrators. Students will have several books from each illustrator to check out and explore. In addition, since all the books feature characters of color, the collection will increase the number of books representative of the students in my school.
